The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce is fully engaged in coordinating many great events this fall. This year,  we are very proud to be celebrating our 125th anniversary as a organization.  We will be hosting a mayoral forum with Prince Albert’s,  three mayoral candidates.  This event is open to everyone and the forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library Auditorium, on Wednesday, October 17/ 2012. We encourage everyone to come early to enjoy a coffee as well as to submit a question for consideration for the candidates to answer.

On Oct.23/2012 Premier Brad Wall, will address the City of Prince Albert at our sold out luncheon.  The Premiers address will offer a update on the continuing Saskatchewan Advantage.

On November 6/2012, the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Chairman’s Night”, this great event will see out new Board Chair and Board Members complete their oaths as they are formally sworn into their roles.  This evening will feature a great emcee – Richard Ahenakew, as well as key note speaker Dr. Doyle Anderson- President of First Nations University of Canada.  We will also look to issue a  new life time membership to  a local businessperson who has made a very positive contribution to our business community over the past several decades.

Prince Albert has made another positive mention in a recent report, Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has released a report titled “Communities in Boom”  The report summarizes the 14 indicators that were used to evaluate Prince Albert on its potential to sustain and attract entrepreneurs or new business start ups.  Prince Albert placed 7th overall and is contending with larger cities such as Edmonton, Calgary and Saskatoon.  The report details some of the favorable aspects that Prince Albert has to offer; 6% growth of new business over last year, of 100 cities polled Prince Albert ranked in fifth place as having the highest score from respondents, who indicated the overall state of business was good,  High quality of life that Prince Albert has to offer, Support for small business by both provincial & municipal governments.  The report also indicates that only 39% of the respondents indicated that the regulation and red tape associated with starting and operating a business in Prince Albert is problematic.  Prince Albert continues to be recognized as a great place that offer many opportunities, whether it be to start a business, or raise a family.

2012 Municipal Election

October 24/2012 is the date that Prince Albert & other municipalities will look to complete the municipal electoral process to select a Mayor, Councillors and School Board Members.

This year will be the first Saskatchewan municipal election to have all successful candidates complete a four year term over the three terms previously served. Four long years, does this mean each voter should complete more due diligence in selecting the candidate(s) they choose to represent them moving forward, perhaps?

What about voter turnout, our last municipal election realized very low voter turnouts, Saskatoon 27%, Regina 24%. Surely, we must need our community to fully engage to ensure those elected, do represent the majority of our community citizens.

I encourage you to review the list of all completed nominations, once the nomination process concludes on September 19/12. Review the list of all candidates running for Mayor, City Council and the School Board. Summarize any concerns you may have or changes you would like to see.

Review candidate’s platforms to see if their priorities are seen in the same light as yours, ask questions and become engaged. Remember this is your community, use your voice to ensure the direction and stewardship of our fine city is lead by the candidate of your choosing.

Hopefully this upcoming election will see an increase in community engagement and voter turnout to ensure that those successful candidates chosen represent the majority of our communities’ citizens.

The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce will look to host a Mayoral candidate’s forum for our members to attend and ask questions of participating Mayoral candidate’s.   If you are a member please look to attend, if you are not a member, it never too late to join the Chamber or you can look for other forums being hosted and look to engage.
